How to Back Up Your Phone: A Simple Guide for Android and iPhone

Your phone probably holds years of photos, contacts and messages. Setting up automatic backups takes about ten minutes and can save you from a very bad day.

Back up an Android phone

  1. Open Settings and search for Backup (the exact menu name varies by manufacturer).
  2. Make sure backup to your Google account is turned on.
  3. Tap Back up now to run the first backup.

This typically covers app data, contacts, call history, device settings and SMS. For photos and videos, turn on backup in Google Photos (tap your profile picture → Photos settings → Backup).

Back up an iPhone

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Go to iCloud → iCloud Backup and switch it on.
  3. Tap Back Up Now while connected to Wi-Fi.

Prefer not to use the cloud? Connect your iPhone to a computer and back it up with Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices / iTunes app on Windows.

💡 Tip: Free cloud storage fills up quickly. Check how much space your backup needs before assuming it is working.

Don’t forget your chat apps

Messaging apps like WhatsApp keep their own backups. Open the app’s settings, find Chats → Chat backup, and schedule a daily or weekly backup.

Follow the 3-2-1 rule for important files

  • 3 copies of your data
  • on 2 different types of storage
  • with 1 copy kept off-site (the cloud counts)

Once a month, open your backup settings and confirm the “last backup” date is recent. A backup you never check is a backup you cannot trust.
